How to update the software on a Garmin watch

By daniele

No matter what mobile devices you use on a daily basis, it’s best to make sure they’re all running the latest software, as this can give you access to new features, improve security or fix annoying bugs.

If we talk about the Garmin brand, you will know that it is a brand that has been specializing for years in the manufacture of sports watches with smart features. In fact, these are devices that, hand in hand with mobile-related functionalities, offer different options for monitoring physical activity depending on the budget we are willing to spend.

So, if you are one of the many wearers of these wonderful models, you don’t want to miss out on the new updates that Garmin continuously brings out for you, do you?

Certainly, software updates on Garmin watches are rolled out automatically. Although it never hurts to have a guide to verify that yours is receiving automatic updates as it should.

What you’ll need

In this note we will be using a Garmin Forerunner 255. If you have a different model you can still follow a similar process to check for automatic updates.

The short version

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll down to System
  • Select Software Update
  • Make sure that Auto Update is set to On

We will now proceed to explain the step-by-step, so read very carefully:

Step 1: Open Settings

First of all, we recommend that you delve into the Settings menu of the watch. For example, on the Forerunner 255, you can do this by pressing and holding the Up button from the home screen, but this method may differ depending on your Garmin watch.

Step 2: Scroll down to System

Then, once in the Settings menu, scroll down until you see the System option and select it.

Step 3: Select Software Update

Now, scroll down again to Software Update and select this option.

Step 4: Make sure that Auto Update is set to On

Finally, in this menu you will see ‘Auto Update’; if enabled, as shown below, your watch should receive software updates automatically, although they may take days to arrive.

As you can see, it is a simple process that does not involve much time but is undoubtedly very important because the best way to take advantage of a technological device is to keep up to date with all its news so that you can take advantage of all its functions from day one.

We hope this quick guide will help you check the current status of software updates on your watch. Enjoy it!
